What Causes Windshields To Crack Overnight?

Temperatures: Fast changes in temperature can cause a windshield to crack. Take for example, a car that is left outside on a hot day and then brought inside the garage at night - this causes the inside of the windshield to rapidly fall from very hot temperatures to very cold. This fluctuation may cause your windshield to break or crack as it tries to adjust itself back down to room temperature.

Windshield De-Icer: Some cars have a windshield de-icer built right into their defroster system, but if your car does not have one you will need to purchase one separately and use it every time you park your car outside during winter months.  If you fail to coat your windshield with de-icer before it freezes, you risk cracking the glass.

Car Washing: When washing your car in winter months, avoid getting water or other fluids on the inside of your windshield. If too much moisture is present when temperatures drop again, a crack may result.

Chips and Cracks: Chips and cracks happen when stress is distributed on your glass during temperature fluctuations, they also grow larger over time and should not be left for too long without repair. Small chips and cracks can easily be repaired, and should be taken care of immediately so they do not become larger and cause your windshield to break more easily.
